The belle from Gujerat and the beauty from Maharashtra often get together at Filmland parties and invariably a chatty gossip session ensues. As “Filmfare” award-win­ner Usha Kiron jabs a finger at Nirupa, she seems almost to say, “And that is what I told her, but she just wouldn’t … !” Or perhaps Usha said, “Look, Nirupaben, I’ve work­ed in Gujerati pictures, and you should act in some Marathi ones!” But, whatever it is that Usha says so animatedly, these two charming young women are never at a loss for subjects to discuss! – August 1955

Nirupa Roy

As an artiste, Nirupa Roy hasmade a successful–transition from mythologicals to socials. Films in both categories (“Har Har Maha­dev” and “Do Bigha. Zamin” are representative ones) reveal that she is equally at home in goddess roles and depictions of human ones. But there is some danger of this accomplished actress becoming “typed” and forever being seen as a peasant’s wife, the postman’s daughter or a wife of the poorer classes making all kinds of sacri­fices for husband, children and home. Her assignments in “Tak­saal,” “Tangawali” and other pro­ductions show which way her film work is taking her. Nirupa, how­ever, should be able to take care of that. Good humored, co-operative and a sincere artiste who tackles her work with the same zest she brings to the enjoyment of her moments of leisure, Nirupa is popular with all.
