Kauser Parveen
Kauser Parveen was one of the most popular playback singers of the 50s. Third, and best known of the 3 famed Nath sisters (the other two being Asha Posley and Rani Kiran), she was born in Patiala – India, in 1933. She started her singing career in early 50s and came into prominence when she sang for Gumnaam (1954) and Sassi (1954) for Master Inayat Hussain and G.A. Chisthi respectively. Her solos from the film Gumnaam – Ae chand unsai kehna, Aankhein mila kai pyaar sai, and Chham chhama chham nach utha are still remembered by music buffs even today.
1955 proved to be a memorable year in her short career. She sang for two hit films Inteqam and Qatil, again under the baton of Master Inayat Hussain. While Qatil is mostly remembered today for that immortal Iqbal Bano weepy Ulfat ki nai manzil ko chala, it was a memorable soundtrack and Kauser Parveen held her own with her romantic solo O maena na janey kia ho gaya picturized on Sabiha Khanum. Yet another highlight of 1955 was the lori – Raj dularey tohe dil mein basaoun from Naukar. Composed by G.A. Chisthi, it was the plagiarized version of the Indian song sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The film version of this song was sung by Munawwar Sultana and picturized on Swaranlata. However, the 78rpm records were released with Kausar Parveen’s voice, and it is the Kauser’s version that is remembered even today and became one of the most popular songs of her career.
With the arrival of Zubaida Khanum, Kauser’s popularity began to wane in the late 50s. However, two superhit films relased in 1957 – Wadah and Saath Laakh, still showed her versatility as a playback singer. For Saath Laakh, she sang the tearful Sitamgar mujhe bewafa janta hai, and perhaps one of the finest mujra songs ever composed – Yeh tirchi nazar yeh patli qamar. For Waadah, she sang that evergreen classical duet with Sharafat Ali – Baar baar barsey morey nain, mohe kaisey mile chain. The music of both of these superhit films was composed by Rashid Attre.
On a personal note, she was married to notable music director Akhter Hussain Ankhiyan. Unfortunately, Kauser died very young on December 3, 1963, at the tender age of 30 – Ummer Siddique
