Lata Mangeshkar – Shamshad Begum Duets
____________________
Back to Legends – Shamshad Begum | Back to Legends – Lata Mangeshkar
____________________
Shamshad Begum was reigning playback queen when Lata joined the film industry. Therefore, it is not surprising that in their first song together [along with Mohantara Talapade], Lata sang with other chorus girls while Shamshad was the main singer! Their first popular duet together was Darna mohabbat karle from Andaz (1949) composed by Naushad.
Considering that Shamshad and Lata were Naushad’s favorite female playback singers, it isn’t surprising that Naushad composed the maximum number of Shamshad-Lata duets and most of these duets remain popular even today.

Lata Mangeshkar once told Shamshad, “No one has seen the kind of stardom and respect that you did!” (Source:- Shamshad Begum’s interview conducted by Lata Khubchandani)

Note :- Song list provided above only gives approximate number of duets Lata and Shamshad sang together and it only includes songs sung in Hindi Films (doesn’t include songs sung in regional languages).
yeh tirchi nazar aur teekhi ada composed by C. Ramchandra was used twice – first in Lehrein in 1953 and then in Duniya Gol Hai in 1955.
According to the Book “Lata Mangeshkar… in her own voice”, Lata mentions another duet with Shamshad Begum, “… But I believe a greater number of playback singers sang together in a qawali for composer Shyam Sunder. There was Zohra Bai, Rajkumari, Shamshad Begum, Kalyani, Hamida [Bano], her brother, Iqbal and me. These artists were well known in their time. I don’t remember the title of the qawali or the name of the film.”

Mukesh – Part 1
Duet of Lata Mangeshkar & Shamshad Begum. The three songs you mentioned above are not recorded in Lata’s voice like Jab nain mile nainon se. It’s Shamshad with chorus. Also the duet Hello hello gentlemen from Actress is another singer not Lata Mangeshkar. The song Holi aayi re kanhai from Mother India is also recorded in the voice of Ramadevi. It’s mentioned as a duet of Shamshad & Lata – i agree with you nowhere i can hear Lata’s voice. Maybe they have mistakenly mentioned her name because at that time Lata Mangeshkar was no 1 so why should she sing in chorus?
I am mailing you the titles of the missing songs. They are: 1 = Panghat pe na jaiyo gori ghunghat utaar ke From the movie Raj Mukut in 1950.
2 = O ladke o ladke dil dhak dhak dhak dhadke wahan ladki ka dil From the movie Shabistan in 1951.
3 = Door koyi gaye dhun yeh sunaye from Baiju Bawra. Its A duet of Shamshad Begum with Lata Mangeshkar & Mohd Rafi.————
Regional language.

You have a very lovely site with great information.

Hello Radjesh,
Thanks for your input! I have updated the Shamshad-Lata song list with the information you provided. “Hello Hello Gentleman” is a duet by Shamshad Begum and Lalita Deeolkar. Lata’s voice is absent in the song, it looks like by mistake they credited this song to Lata. I am also removing “Jab nain miley nainoun sai” and “Holi aayi ri kanhai” from the Shamshad-Lata duets list. I think they are just mistakes made by Hindi Film Geet Kosh.
I visited your website, it is very nice with lovely pictures. But I think it is in Dutch, and I cant read Dutch lol!.
Do you think the Qawalli Lata means is the one in Gaon Ki Gori/Village Girl:

In the Qawwali there are many relevances: music by Shyam Sundar. I can also recognise the voices of Rajkumari, Kalyani, Hamida Bano, Iqbal Bano and Zohrabai. I think Amirbai is also one of the singers. Although I can guess that Zohrabai and Iqbal Bano sing in the same stanza, I cannot hear either Shamshad or Lata. Or is it that they are just part of the chorus? Please tell me about your opinion on this.
No. Lata playbacked for the first time in 1947 and Village Girl was released in 1945.
Please note that Lata is talking about Hamida Bano’s brother Iqbal, and not about Ghazal singer Iqbal Bano.
Vidur,
The qawali Lata was talking about was “Haye yeh bholi surat wale” from Char Din (1949) where 7 playback singers took part!
Dear,
Tune Dekha Ik Nazar…..there is no voice of Lata……….The main singers are Noor Jahan,Zohara and Kalyani………..The film was completed in 1943..and this is first hindi film both of Noor Jahan and Muhammad Rafi in Bombay..
With Regards
Abbas Sadik Masanvi
I would be very thankful if you could share or direct me to the grand song in Char Din (1949), please? Also, do you know who all are the singers of the Village Girl Qawwali? Two voices I can clearly make out are Kalyani’s and Amirbai’s. Also perhaps Rajkumari, Hamida Bano and Parul Ghosh are other singers.
The qawalli from Char Din is a very rare one and not easily available. I would love to share it with you and other music lovers if I get my hands on this qawalli.
I listened to the qawalli from Village Girl, and it sounds like Zohra Bai, Kalyani and Chorus.
I’ve good news – here’s the Char Din Qawwali in two parts!
http://hindi-films-songs.com/kp-7.html
But the singers are not what you mentioned (listen!) It is Iqbal, Lata, Rafi, Zohrabai and Rajkumari
Yeah you are right. I listened to that qawalli and I can’t hear Shamshad, Kalyani or Hamida’s voice anywhere. But then it was Lata herself who said, all these singers joined her to sing the qawalli in the Book “Lata in her own voice”. And Lata’s geet Kosh also mentions all these singers. Maybe there is another version of this qawalli where all these singers sang together.
I listened with attention to the Village Girl Qawwali and am now sure that the singers stanza-wise are as follows:
1. Kalyani, Amirbai
2. Zohrabai
3. Rajkumari, Amirbai (on Rehana)
Please do make a post on Kalyani Ji. I have the lyrics of this song (wrote it myself)
and you could make a post if you want with that.
I also noticed that some songs in Zeenat and Village Girl (both Noor Jehan starres) had Kalyani and Zohrabai singing-acting!
Tell me if you are interested to know more about this.
Yes I am interested to know more about this and please can you also send me the picture of Kalyani if you have one?
Could give you lyrics if you want(tell me if you do), and could send you song stills from Mukti (1937), Zeenat (1945) (not photos) of Kalyani (and Zohrabai? depends on your needs…) if you want. The same case with Zohrabai in Village Girl (1945)and Zeenat.
I could also send you an almost comprehensive list of singers and actors/actresses in songs of Zeenat if you want, a couple in Village Girl too with all singers.
And please do write articles on Kalyani and Bhaijan (1945)
I do have an Urdu article on Kalyani, which I will translate in English and post it here whenever I have time.
Also, yes it would be nice if you can provide song stills of Zohra and Kalyani.
