Nazli

Loking objectively at this shot from the 80s farce Dollar man, which may or may not have been influenced by the occidental show ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’, one wonders how this look worn by B-actress Nazli ever got past the censors. Although the actress’ face is typically eastern; with flawless well arched brows, kohled doe eyes and glossy lips, the sartorial aspect would give Julia Robert’s ‘Pretty Woman’ stylist a complex! The 80s were never known to be a great fashion decade anyhow, and actresses like Nazli whose films roles never rose above the mediocre, took the zeitgeist’s kitschness to the hilt. The honey blonde curled wig is not the first fashion faux pas, as neither such texture nor color exists in real life. Perhaps, it was used in the same way as the bob wig worn by ‘Pretty Woman’ Ms. Roberts: a pre-coital tease blurring the line between film audience’s fantasies amid a Martial Law era, and the impossibility of attainment. The polka dotted slightly A-line shirtdress looks almost incongruous and tawdry on the slightly plumpish ingénue posed nonchalantly with leather tote on shoulder. However, the saving grace, the fashion kicker, is the Nancy Sinatra inspired silver go-go boots. You would forgive anyone for having the chutzpah to wear the Carnaby Street meet Landa Bazar footwear accruements. Unfortunately, Nazli’s only claim to fame (or infamy) was her controversial relationship with Rafi Khawar (Nanna). The two began a relationship that was properly based more on connivance on Nazli’s par, then true love. After living it up with Nanna’s film income, she unceremoniously dumped him. Many in the film community blame Nazli for a despondent Nanna’s eventual gunshot suicide that cut short a brilliant career that included the immensely popular ‘Alif Noon’ serial and the hit Punjabi movie ‘Sala Saab’ with Ali Ejaz. Beauty is often a strange aphrodisiac, and in the case of Nazli it proved deadly.
